A. Answer the following questions.
1. Why do you suppose almost everyone in the village attended Carmen's funeral?
Ans. I think that almost everyone in the village attended Carmen's funeral simply because she was a bright, kind and a love able child. Also, since she was the only child of the Soto family and it was a tragic event of her passing away at such a young age.

2. Do you think there were any vehicles used in the funeral procession? Explain.
Ans. No, there were no vehicles used in the funeral procession, since it is no where mentioned about the vehicles being used in the funeral procession. Also, in the story, it is clearly mentioned that Carmen's father carried her casket on her shoulders, indicating the same.

3. Why do you suppose the people marched single-file to the cemetery?
Ans. I think that the people marched single-file to the cemetery maybe because the route they chose towards the cemetery was a small and a narrow one and also it might because it was a part of their religious tradition.

4. What indications are there in the story that the family was poor?
Ans. In the story, there are no direct indications about the family being poor. But there are some clues through which we can figure out that they were poor. The first indication is that they were farmers earning very little. Also we can also see that the Soto family didn't take Carmen to a doctor as they couldn't afford it. And lastly we can see that Mr. Soto becomes angry on finding out that his wife had given away all of Carmen's toys and clothing's to a priest of a neighbouring village as they wont be able to afford to purchase newer ones, if in case Mrs. Soto had given birth to another child.

5. Why do you think, Rosa gave Carmen's things to someone from another village? Why didn't she give them to a neighbour or the priest of her own village?
Ans. I think that the reason for Rosa giving away Carmen's things to someone from another village maybe because she dosen't want to be reminded of her deceased daughter when she sees a child or someone from the village using it.

6. Why did Roberto want to save Carmen's things?
Ans. Roberto wanted to save Carmen's things as they would not be able to afford it if they did have a birth of another child.

Ans. Rosa says that there was no reason to save them because the doctor had earlier said them that Carmen would be their only child and there was no hope of her having another baby.

8. Rosa said to her husband that "False hope is not good". When does hope become false? How can we know hope is false?
Ans. A hope becomes false when someone hopes for something which cannot be fulfilled.
*We can know that a hope is false when there is no sign of it becoming true.

9. What did Rosa want to say when she said to her husband, "You know that in four years...."?
Ans. Rosa actually wanted to say that they never had a child for the past four years.

10. Why do you think Roberto thought of Carmen's doll when he looked out of the window to the backyard?
